"Music plays an important part in the life of Saint Malachy's College..."
The College offers instrumental and vocal lessons to all students through our own Music Service, which is administered by the Music Department and delivered by our very talented team of Peripatetic Music Teachers.
We offer tuition on a wide range of instruments, including:
Strings: Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass
Wind: Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon
Brass: Trumpet, Cornet, French Horn, Trombone, Tuba
Percussion: Orchestral Percussion, Drum Kit
Keyboard: Piano, Organ
Guitars: Acoustic Guitar, Electric Guitar, Bass Guitar
Other: Voice, Irish Fiddle, Tin Whistle
Boys are able to begin lessons at any point throughout their College career, although we recommend that he begins as soon as possible!
In Year 8, we aim to give boys the opportunity to try a number of instruments during their first few weeks. He may have an undiscovered talent or might wish to take up a new hobby! Boys who have studied instruments at primary school are strongly encouraged to continue lessons at the College or through the CBSM.
Boys who take instrumental or vocal lessons, either within the College or externally, are expected to contribute to the College’s excellent extra-curricular Music programme to gain important performance and ensemble skills in order to further develop their talents!
Graded Examinations
Students are able to enter for external graded music examinations through the College (ABRSM, Theory, RockSchool). Forms are available in the Music Department. We recommend that students complete at least one grade exam per year.
