St. Malachy’s retained the Vince Halloran schools title with some excellent displays at the Antrim Forum. The boys defeated St. Mary’s CBS, Belfast, Our Lady and St Patrick’s, Knock and St. Patrick’s Academy, Dungannon in the pool games with up tempo basketball and every player contributing. The Academy game proved to be a close encounter; however some fine scores by Darragh Ferguson and rebounding by Niall Quinn helped the College to a six point margin.
In the semi-final, St. Malachy’s faced a strong Lagan College team but again, the greater strength in depth saw the College secure a convincing victory. Callum Rocks, John Rainey, Niall Morgan, Oliver Morrow and Vincent Enginco all made superb contributions.
The final matched the College against our old adversaries from across town, Aquinas Grammar School (who had come through a pulsating semi -final against the Academy to win by a single point).
The first half was extremely tight, reflected in the half time score 16-15. However, Mr Fulton noted that in the third quarter ‘the College’s big men began to get grips on the boards with Paul Sheehy in dominant form, finishing off many opportunities’. Mr Fulton went on to say that ‘with the excellent Darragh Ferguson conducting play from the point guard position, St .Malachy's ran out comfortable victors in the end’.
We would like to extend a huge thank you (yet again) to Mr Paul McCrory who coached the team this year alongside Mr Ciaran Quinn (Assistant coach); both did a fantastic job!
