On Tuesday 16th June, 230 Malachians travelled to the Antrim Forum for the College’s annual Sports Day.
In a sun-kissed stadium, students and staff in attendance generated a terrific atmosphere, one that offered a real sense of encouragement to those leading the field or at the back!
As the results suggest, the sprints were hotly contested with fine margins separating many of the races. Joe McGann (11A) and Matteo Lavorca (10E) secured the 100m and 200m double at Year 11 and Year 10 respectively but the Year 8 and Year 9 sprints were shared.
Cormac O'Rourke (10E) and Conall Browne (10A) excelled at the middle distance events and Adam Ferris (9A) deserves a special mention for winning the 1500m at Year 9 after losing out to Lewis McGarvey (9E) in the 800m.
In the Year 8 field events, Paul Sheehy (8B) had a great day winning medals in the shot putt, the high jump and the long jump. Jai Benson (10F) narrowly missed out on the long jump record, coming up short by a mere 3cm but still secured the gold medal. One of the highlights of the day was the massive support for John-Joe McGrady (9C) as he battled home in the 1500m to tremendous applause.
The PE Department would like to thank all the boys and all the other staff for getting involved and making the day another tremendous occasion.
