It has been a brilliant year for the College on the basketball front. St. Malachy's took their 3rd All Ireland title this year. The Year 10 team beat St Pat's Castleisland (last years winners) in the semi final after an excellent team performance. It was tight at half time but we pushed on in the 3rd quarter and actually ran out convincing winners on a score line of 53-38. Rathmore (Co. Kerry) overcame Colaiste Choilm (Cork) in a close encounter in the other semi final to set up a clash with the Belfast boys.
It was nip and tuck through the first half with Rathmore's up tempo style setting up some easy early opportunities and Paul O'Leary hit three consecutive three pointers. However, Conn Doherty and Cormac O'Rourke kept the Belfast boys in touch with some excellent drives to the basket. However, St.Malachy's trailed 27-24 at half time. The St.Malachy's boys responded in tremendous fashion in the third quarter by keeping Rathmore scoreless and racking up fifteen unanswered points. Irish international Conor Cooke led the way on offence and he was ably assisted by Cormac O'Rourke. Irish international Conor Ryan alongside Niall Hurson and Conor McDonnell really knuckled down at the defensive end to make scores really difficult to come by for the Kerry side.
Still, Rathmore were not going to lie down and they themselves upped the pressure defensively by pressing St Malachy's and creating some turnovers. International point guard CJ Fulton steadied the ship scoring 8 of St Malachy's last 15 points to help seal the win.
