On Tuesday, 24th January, St Malachy’s hosted St Louis Grammar, Ballymena in the second round of the Northern Ireland Schools Debating Competition.
The issue before the house was once again ‘Brexit’ with the College proposing the motion on this occasion; adjudicating was Mr Richard Jay, a former QUB academic.
Both teams presented cogent and well-researched arguments with Mr Jay highlighting the strengths of each side; commending St Malachy’s on the quality of their reasoning in welcoming a United Kingdom departure from the European Union and St Louis on their poise at the lectern.
In delivering his judgement, the match was awarded to St Louis, who now progress to the third round. However, he commented on the ‘great potential’ of the St Malachy’s ‘A’ team, in what was their first year in the competition.
Congratulations to all involved and we would like to wish St Louis all the very best in round three!
