Two of our Year 10 students have recently returned from a fantastic visit to the World War One Battlefields in Belgium and northern France. We had a very early flight to Gatwick airport and then travelled to Ypres via the Channel tunnel which was an experience in itself! Ypres proved to be an ideal base from which to explore the battlefields of the Ypres Salient and the Somme. There were many highlights of the visit: the Island of Ireland Peace Park at Messines, the trenches of Thiepval Wood; Tyne Cot cemetery; the German military cemetery at Langemark; the Memorial to the Missing at Thiepval and many more. We returned home with some lasting memories of the Irish contribution to World War One and some new friends from schools across NI. Sincere gratitude to the Education Authority for organising this wonderful opportunity for our students.
