Music Department Update

October

The Jazz Band kicked off October by performing at the Junior Prize Giving on the 3rd. It was a particularly busy month for the Irish Traditional Group as they performed in the Europa Hotel for the Suffolk Centre’s 40 Year Anniversary Celebration and then, a week later, for the new Lord Mayor’s Installment in City Hall on 26th October. On Friday 25th October, the College came together to celebrate the annual Feast Day of St. Malachy in St Patrick’s Church, featuring performances from the College Choir and Chamber Choir, who gave a stunning performance of Thomas Tallis’ If Ye Love Me to open the mass. There was also music from the Trad Group and Senior Strings, who performed Bach’s well-known Brandenburg Concerto No.3.

November

November was another busy month for musicians: The Chamber Choir performed at the Old Boys Mass on Monday 11th November; we also prepared for our three performances of ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat’ on 20th and 21st. The three shows were spectacular, the boys were amazing, and the Hall was sold out on both nights! Members from the Jazz Band and the entire Junior Choir took part in this stunning production. There was no rest for the Jazz Band however, as they performed at the Friends of St. Malachy’s Gala Dinner two days later on the 23rd. November concluded with selected boys representing the College at the Holywood Music Festival on the week of the 25th. Congratulations to Kelan, Eoin, Patrick, Callum, Eoin and Adam who all competed.

December

With the Christmas Season fast approaching, the Music Department is supporting a number of events throughout the city. Firstly, the Trad Group are taking part in a cross-community service, Carols For All, in The Duncairn on Monday 2nd. Tuesday 3rd sees a new addition to the Music Diary, an Advent Carol Service in St. Patrick’s Donegall Street at 7.30pm. The following day the Senior Strings will be providing music for the Ulster History Circle’s Blue Plaque unveiling to commemorate the artist Sir John Lavery, again at St. Patrick’s. On Sunday 15th, we look forward to hearing the Jazz Band performing in their very own Christmas Showcase at Lowe Memorial Church in Finaghy, starting at 7pm.
